On Her Bike: Riding the Heart of Malawi: A Journey Along Lake Malawi

Malawi, the "Warm Heart of Africa," is a landlocked country renowned friendly people and diverse landscapes.

My ride through Malawi wasn’t just another stop on my global journey - it became a place fixed deeply in my heart.

Malawi may be a small country, but its huge lake is absolutely hypnotising! I spent most of my trip along its shores, and there was so much to see and do. The lake is so immense it feels like a sea, stretching far beyond the horizon. Life here revolves around fishing, community, and breathtaking scenery. Riding along the shores, I soaked in the beauty and rhythm of lakeside living.

Exploring the Northern Highlands

My first stop was the legendary Mushroom Farm Eco-Lodge, sitting high up in the northern highlands. This quirky, offbeat spot required riding a steep and tricky road to get there - a challenge well worth it! Mushroom Farm offers all private and dorm rooms but I preferred to set up my tent right on the edge, with spectacular views of Lake Malawi below. This is such a memorable stop and a place not to miss by overlanders.

As I descended back to the lakeshore, I continued south, stopping at Nkhata Bay. Here, I found what I would call my favourite lodges on my around the world tour - Mayoka Village Lodge. Built into cliffs overlooking the lake, this haven offered paddleboards, kayaks, and even communal meals with the staff and guests. It’s just amazing. They’ve created such a wonderful space.

The Mid-Lake Gem: Kande Beach

Further south, Kande Beach stood out for its relaxed vibe and captivating history. Run by a English adventurers who once led overland tours across Africa, the beach offers cozy cottages, camping spots, and an ocean-like lakeside atmosphere. I loved the feeling of being right on the beach.

Heartwarming Encounters in Monkey Bay

On the southern shores of Lake Malawi, I found myself in Cape Maclear, a haven for travellers. Mufasa Eco-Lodge stood out, thanks to its incredible owner, Ricky. A retired human rights lawyer with experience in war zones worldwide, Ricky now focuses on the local community, running a sports and education program. This program provides children with nourishment, academic support, and the chance to flourish.

Ricky's work was truly inspiring, and I felt compelled to do something. I decided to sponsor a young boy named Miamiko, who had been waiting to join the program. A year later, I returned to Malawi, eager to spend time with him. He's such a cheery, energetic boy, and we had the best time swimming, playing, and just hanging out – simple moments that meant the world to both of us.

The Buzzing Life at Cape Maclear

Cape Maclear was the place to be on Lake Malawi – a buzzing hub with a fantastic mix of tourist lodges right on the beach and the vibrant energy of the village. I loved watching the women doing their laundry in the lake, while kids splashed and played nearby, and fishermen mended their nets. It gave me a real sense of Malawian life. And those sunsets? Wow. A sundowner during the sunset, painting the sky in a million colours – it was just incredible.

Why Malawi Stays with Me

Malawi’s beauty is matched only by its people. They’re incredibly friendly and peaceful. Whether it’s the iconic lodges, the adventure of riding along the lake, or the heartwarming connections I made, Malawi left a big mark on my journey. Everybody loves Malawi when they visit. And it’s easy to see why.
