Off the West coast of Scotland, you’ll find several beautiful islands that are great for riding. One of the most popular is Islay that sits on the Atlantic coast not too far from the Northern coast of Ireland. The island is famous to many because of its association with whisky. The island is a region itself in the Scottish whisky map, and the single malts from Islay boast a bold, peaty flavour. This is due to the heavy peat moorland that covers much of the island. Today, there are currently nine distilleries operating on the island, with the Ardnahoe distillery just opening in April 2019. If you get a chance, take in a tour or two of these great distilleries, but just make sure you’re within walking distance of your accommodation before you take a dram! There is a lot more to the island than whisky. The Bowmore road is a beautiful stretch of road that runs completely straight for 12 miles along the beautiful strand coastline. This is a great run for the bike, and visitors will enjoy the fact that there aren’t a single set of traffic lights on the whole island. The best part of taking your motorbike to Islay is you can find your own part of the island by following the coastal roads. Despite the island being popular with tourists, much of it feels untouched and undiscovered. In terms of reaching the island, you can ride from Glasgow to the ferry terminal in Kennacraig in roughly two and a half hours, and the ferry takes another two hours. The drive is very scenic and takes you through the Rest And Be Thankful, which makes for stunning scenery on a good day. As with the financial side, you should always make sure you have sorted coverage to protect your baggage and belongings while you’re away. With so much to see in this part of the country, you should take the time to enjoy the ride to Islay. It’s a stunning island that gives its visitors a truly unique experience.
