Agios Ioannis Rossos ( Saint John Rossi :))

Marvellous winding forest road.

You take one turn after another and many greek riders have learned cornering on this particular scenic road. Recently (Autumn '16) some tight turns have extended to three lanes to facilitate the traffic but in the most part it remains a single lane per direction. Marvellous green landscape along a river. Hazards: Be prepared that you might see some motorcycle riders in the wrong lane all of a sudden. Some individuals tent to ride aggressively ignoring traffic laws. Also you have to check quite often your mirrors. Poor road lighting is making driving at night a lot more dangerous. In late of May every year, hundreds of people take a walk along this 40km route for a popular religious pilgrimage, even late at night.

It is one of the most unique roads in the country as it offers a breathtaking astonishing view of Meteora. The magestic Meteora peaks is included multiple times in the UNESCO World Heritage List for different reasons. Meteora is a famous complex of monasteries built on huge natural rock pillars with average elevation about 300 metres.

The essence of the mountains!

Marvellous scenic road! It has one of the most beautiful mountainous scenery of central Greece, but you have to pay attention in some points where there is a subsidence of pavement and parts paved with gravel. Especially the part from Gardiki to Pertouli. At the other end of the road I would extended it from Polythea to Kastania and Mourgkani, because the scenery is equally beautiful as it passes through a dense forest area. It is highly recommended to visit the church of Holy Cross Dolianon, built in 1630 at an altitude of 1150m. between Doliana & Krania in the heart of South Pindos. Particularly among the most impressive and wonderful religious monuments as it has a very unique and peculiar architecture.

Kaggelia of Papingo

In a way it's more a POI than a road, because it is the only accessible road to reach Papingo Villages. That literally means you will ride it twice (ascending and descending) but definatelly you will enjoy it. Further Aristi village towards Papingo, the road descents to a bridge over Voidomatis river. At this point starts a steep, 3km long, twisty roller coaster with 18 hairpins, called “Kaggelia of Papingo”. Be careful the road slipperiness, especially when you pass this part by the opposite direction, returning from Papingo.

Marvellous pass through Mt Dirfis

Marvellous pass through Mt Dirfis (the highest mountain of Euboea/Evia island). There are forests on the lower slopes while most of the mountain is covered with grassland. The first part of the road up to the Dirfy's refugee climbs steeply in a forest area to a pass point (for about 10km after Steni village the elevation changes from 400m to 1014m). From this point and on the road goes downwards offering great panoramic view to the surrounding mountains and the Aegean see. It is worth to stop in about 32km away from Steni Village to take a photograph from high above of the Metoxi & Chiliadou beaches (my photo).
