Europe's dirt road adventure: The Trans Euro Trail!

What’s Trans Euro Trail? A community of motor enthusiasts, adventurous riders who created a dirt road adventure from deep within the Arctic Circle to the doorstep of Africa…and back.

A stretch of more than 38000 km of dirt road and small scenic roads across Europe, an epic motorcycle journey through some of Europe's most remote, diverse and inspirational landscapes.

Trans Euro Trail is not a profit driven tour company; our goal is to create a Community Interest Company.

TET has been founded by John Ross, a Scotsman with a great fascination for the Trans American Trail: 8000 km of gravel- and dirt roads through the USA. It inspired John to create a European counterpart, the Trans Euro Trail.

Social media led him to a bunch of off-road riders all over Europe, who created and maintain a track in their country of origin. They are the so-called "Linesmen" and are also the local contact persons.

The roads vary from rather technical sections to small asphalt roads.  All roads are 100% legal to ride; it’s a hell of job to make and keep these tracks negotiable! The local laws sometimes make things complicated, but the overall goal is to provide (semi)-experienced riders with a scenic adventurous ride that can be managed with light- to medium weight all-road/off-road machines. In some countries the route can be ridden with the big all-road machines (GS, Africa Twin, KTM Adv, …) although they will be confronted with some challenging parts.

The TET has an “Open Source” character. This means that you can freely download the desired GPX tracks. But you can also make modifications, new propositions and forward this to the linesman. This makes the TET a dynamic route, which is kept up to date by the community. In the mean time this community is growing fast. The Facebook page is gaining more and more members; the nice thing about this is that off-road riders in all of Europe find one another in this community and meet up for a ride together, help each other out…

Of course there will be some challenges coming up ahead: with more popularity come more regulations, laws, restrictions… This is also the reason why the community (and I) would stress that respect for farmers, people who live near the route, hikers, … is enormously important! Don’t make it a race, but make it a journey and enjoy!
