Whilst the A12 through Essex is boring mundane and horrible, it leads to the Suffolk section to the east of Ipswich. This fairly boring road unlocks the OANB that is the Suffolk Coast from Woodbridge to Kessingland. Either side of this stretch of road lays points of interest; Bawdsley Manor where Radar was developed. Sutton Hoo the Saxon Kings burial Ground. Orford and Orford Ness famed for it development of Aviation from the 1st WW through to Cold War developments up until the late 1970’s. It is now a bird sanctuary and a SSSI site. Aldeborough - apparently amazing Fish and Chips if you patient enough to que. Snape Maltings, this is always worth a look and has good food and drinks and even a vintage makers market. Dunwich and Dunwich Forest, Dunwich was washed away by the infamous east coast, costal erosion back in the 15th century, but during the 14th century it was a larger city than London and all that remains of the original City is a ruined Abbey and 1 last grave stone. Framingham Castle, a great Suffolk village and castle to visit. Southwold and Walberswick great Suffolk towns, Southwold being the home of ADNAMS brewery. Then Kessingland where the beauty fades into urban sprawl and holiday parks of Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. There is a wealth of country houses, 2 x more notably are; Heveningham which has a summer fair with a vintage / veteran car show and mini hill clime, also Helmingham Hall also has a great Classic car and motorcycle show. All of these POI‘S are interlinked with footpaths; South Costal Path, Sandlings Way which are 2 continuous paths. Campsites, B&B and hotels. If you use the Suffolk A12 as a spine it will connect you to and unlock some amazing back roads where you can get lost for a short time. Find village pubs serving amazing food and good local beers from; Green Jack, Grain, Lacons, Woodford and of Course ADNAMS breweries. You can spend as much or as little time as you want exploring this part of East Anglia. To recommend a route is difficult, you need to find your own way really. Make sure you visit the cafes and bakeries, 2 Magpies at Darsham on the A12 is an experience, it is not high street cheap but it is definitely not High Street cakes, sandwiches and bread, they have branches in Southwold and Aldeborough as well. The A12 is mundane but it is a key, a key to unlock some amazing adventures, scenery and roads. Oh did I mention the sunsets? No?
