It follows the road from Mestia, passes Ushquli, an awsome village, ascents further on the mountain and then descents towards Lentekhi, another village, where tarmac re-appears and straight forward ends at Kutaisi. It is a gravel road, not in good condition because of the water coming from the snow melting but it's amazing! You are IN, not only feel the Caucasus. It's a challenging but doable road, however. I did it in July '19, riding my super fatty GSA, 2-up. My advice is to ride it from Ushguli to Lentekhi and not vice-versa and certainly during summer.
