Mountains raise spectacularly out of Bucaramanga, going east. The road surface varies from perfectly smooth pavement to rough dirt road with many construction sites. The traffic is very light and scenery incredible. Mountain passes reach 4000 m and are often shrouded in clouds. Before reaching Nevados de Cocuy, dirt road goes through desert scenery that nobody would expect only 100 km away from lush jungle. In Cocuy National Park, one can ride up to 4300m and see the glaciers.
